What do you like about the text?
What do you find challenging about the text?
What does it reveal about God?

Specific Questions:
  1. There are many similarities between the angelic appearances recorded in Luke 1:5-38 but what are the biggest differences?
  2. From what you know about John the Baptist (or look up some other references), how did he prepare the way for Jesus? 
  3. Zechariah and Elizabeth stayed faithful in spite of the disappointment of being unable to conceive. How can we prepare ourselves to hold onto God in the face of setbacks in our lives?
  4. When have you sensed God prompting you to do something challenging and unexpected?  How have you responded?
  5. What does this passage tell us about Jesus?

  1. In some text versions the word magnifies is used to describe Mary's praise of God. What does it mean to magnify God? 
  2. What things do we magnify in our lives? How can we choose to magnify God more intentionally?
  3. Mary is speaking in past tense, as if this great reversal of the world order has already happened. How can it be that in Jesus this work of changing the world has been set in motion. 
  4. How can we choose to worship God, that he is who he says he is and that he is at work even if the things of our lives don't look like it.
